Mars: Anger, Passion, Growth

Traditionally associated with the God of War, Mars has a bit of a reputation, some of which it deserves. Like all the other planets, it represents a fundamental component of our human experience. If you have Mars in a prominent position in your birth chart, it tells you that using and refining Martian energy is an important part of your spiritual growth in this lifetime. So what is Martian energy about?
Violence and Survival
In it’s basic forms, Mars is about survival. The soldiers come to rape and pillage. They bust through the farmhouse door into the hearth room. The noble peasant father goes at them with a pitchfork to protect his loved ones and his home. It’s bloody. It’s ugly. It’s one way Mars operates. The red planet, in many cases, is about the use of force. Here the soldiers are part of its misuse. On the other hand, we might argue that the peasant has done a noble deed, tapping into his courage, using Martain energy to protect his own survival and the survival of his loved ones. The circumstances of how it all ends, I won’t get into, but in the grand karmic scheme of things, I’m betting that the light of that noble peasant’s being is shining brighter.
Our Modern Mars
Fortunately, the vast of majority of people reading this blog will never face a situation on par with the noble peasant’s. In a world where most of us live in peaceful societies with functioning economies, our challenge and triumphs with Mars are of much more refined nature. Two very common Mars threads for people who are trying to accomplish healing in this day and age involve, respectively, anger and sex.
Mars and Anger
Despite what the news would have you believe, the vast majority of us live in an environment that is devoid of any sort of violence or physical aggression. This, of course, is very good. However, many “progressive” and “spiritual” sub-cultures (i.e. those that include people likely to see out astrology readings) have, consciously or unconsciously, made expressing anger or evening having anger, taboo. That’s not a good thing, because it’s not healthy. The experience of anger is as natural as the experience of sadness or excitement, and we must acknowledge it to ourselves if we are going to deal with it in a healthy manner. Often this “healthy manner” involves setting boundaries with others, expressing anger in words in a way that is clear and direct (but not abusive), or letting off steam with physical activities like sports. Every instance is different, but if your Mars has a prominent position in your chart, you may want to consider these threads as you begin to look more deeply at your life.
Mars and Passion
Sometimes sex is sweet and romantic. Sometimes it’s an explosion: the bedposts slam against the wall, the fingers grip in deep and, later, you laugh a little guiltily about waking up the neighbors. The latter is Mars. And, unless we are one of the .0001% of the human population that is spiritually fulfilled by joining a convent or a monastery, we’ve got that passionate side of Mars to own up to. If you have a prominent Mars in your chart (particularly if it’s it somehow associated with relationship symbols), it may be part of your spiritual evolution to engage this part of your sexuality in this lifetime.
The cultural attitudes around sex that most of us have grown up surrounded by are enormously distorted and unhealthy. The challenges we meet in owning up to the passionate side of our Mars cut both ways. In one direction, there is the sense that being dirty or carnal is somehow inherently bad no matter what. A woman might feel like a “whore” on some subconscious level while an educated, progressive man might feel like a objectifier, a rapist, or a monster. The other direction, of course, is an unhealthy attitude that sex is only a physical act with no emotional, spiritual or energetic dimensions. In this case, the passion of Mars becomes a justification for screwing whoever whenever and cutting oneself off to the deeper dimensions of one’s sexuality.
Everyone’s sexuality is quite unique. But to truly own your passionate Mars in today’s world, there are some principles to remember. Good, healthy sex is only possible when built on the bedrock of trust, intimacy and honesty. Sex is an intense energetic exchange and so it must he held within the strong container created when we live these values. For those who feel shy or shameful, it provides the space and security to let loose. For those on the other end of the spectrum, it will help to arrest a cycle of self-wounding and merge physical passion into a healthier and more spiritually fulfilling sexual experience.
